January 23rd

Friday, January 23rd

Today, we spent time at the Powell Creek Preserve Filter Marsh and walked a 1.1 mile loop trail. We have been to another filter marsh and it has opened our eyes to the forethought that people had so many years ago to manage the water that was so abundant in this state.

We learned that filter marshes clean the water and return it to the river where in this case, it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The marshes that are created in residential areas provide habitats where migrating birds stop and nearby residents are able to see them.

We saw three different kinds of birds during our walk and we recognized them all. We only got pictures of two of the birds.

 The Great Heron

 An Anhinga

We also saw some animal scat that we didn’t recognize but we could tell it was from something that ate seeds. I don’t think there are bears in this area---at least I hope there weren’t.

We stopped for lunch at Sonics and chose to sit outside. I have done a little roller skating in the past, but I could never imagine being able to keep my balance while serving meals.

While we were riding in the car, I saw this pretty site of our American flag waving in the breeze.

Cordell liked the license plate on this vehicle and when we noticed the passenger wearing a top hat we thought of our good friend, Jim Harle, who has a vast collection of fun hats.

We have been watching for our resident alligator every day since we arrived here and never saw him until today. He hasn’t been sunning on the edge of our yard yet.

  1. I ate at Sonic today - after talking with you! I was hankerin' for a hot dog and it was a good one too! I bet that car with the 4Laughs license plate was a clown show! Sure wish I was there helpin' you keep an eye on those birds and gators!
