Monday, March 9th
My cousin, Kurt and his wife Ruthie arrived on Saturday
afternoon to spend a week with us. They appreciate this warm weather that I
have begun to take for granted since they drove out of 9° temperature and 12”
of snow on Friday. They live in the Shenandoah Valley and we don’t see each
other very often. Last year, they visited with us here in Fort Myers and we had
a great time together. It felt like we picked up right where we left off.
On Sunday, we all went to church together and I can think
of no better way to spend time with people I love. Kurt and Ruthie left
immediately after the service and drove to Naples where they were able to meet
one of their sons and have lunch with him.
Later, the four of us ate our dinner on the lanai. I am
glad that it finally warmed up enough that the can sit outside comfortably in
the evenings.
After dinner, we all went for a walk in the neighborhood.
Since we changed our clocks last night, we have more daylight now. The sun
always sets later here in Fort Myers than it does at home since we are located
at bit more west.
Before bed, we put Kurt to work on geocache puzzles that all
our other friends have not been able to solve.
Today, we toured the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. We
knew that the guided tours fill up quickly, as does the parking lot and the
overflow parking lot. So we arrived ten minutes after it opened.
The Edison family spent three months during the winter at
their estate, but the Fords usually only stayed 3 weeks. The furnishing inside
the homes belonged to the Edisons.
The properties are nicely landscaped with lots and lots
of different kinds of trees, bushes and plants which are identified for us. Gardens
and ponds contribute to the beauty of the area.
I was especially impressed with a palm tree that was 97
feet when it was last measured.
We ate our lunch at Ford’s garage and were happy that the
weather was warm enough to eat outside. We have visited this restaurant a few
times and are always happy to share the uniqueness of it with our friends and
family.
Later, we spent some time walking around in old downtown
Fort Myers.
We wanted Kurt and Ruthie to see the remains of the old oak tree that was near the Lee County Courthouse and is now sculpted in the form of an eagle in flight.

While window shopping, I saw two t-shirts that I liked.
On the front of one was written, “Wine Aerobics” and on the other," Dinner is Poured”.
I also saw a fancy dress, but it was not for this
grandmother!
